Thinking of going to the US / Canada
It seems that tons of people are retiring in Europe and picking Canada or New Zealand as the place to live. Have you considered New Zealand?
Generally speaking, the west coast of the US is much less crowded and more outdoors oriented than the east coast. California is very strict on car modifications. There are jobs to be had, but job hunting takes longer than usual right now.

just wanted to chime in that you should make the move if that's what your instinct is telling you to do. i also picked up and moved halfway across the globe at 25 and it was one of the best decisions i've ever made. though the decision isn't the hard part...getting up and following through is haha
You'll first need to find a job in the US. Then your job has to sponsor your H1B or H1C Visa. There is also a cap on the number of visa's issued.
You cannot legally work on a visitors visa.
Excerpt: The H-1B Program
U.S. businesses use the H-1B program to employ foreign workers in specialty occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise in specialized fields, such as scientists, engineers, or computer programmers.
For more information about the H-1B program, see the link to the left under temporary workers for H-1B Specialty Occupations, DOD Cooperative Research and Development Project Workers, and Fashion Models.
How USCIS Determines if an H-1B Petition is Subject to the FY 2011 Cap
We use the information provided in Part C of the H-1B Data Collection and Filing Fee Exemption Supplement (Form I-129, pages 14 through 15) to determine whether a petition is subject to the 65,000 H-1B numerical limitation (the “cap”). Some petitions are exempt from the cap under the advanced degree exemption provided to the first 20,000 petitions filed for a beneficiary who has obtained a U.S. master’s degree or higher.

Your best bet for housing is probably www.craigslist.com
You can check housing costs anywhere in the US using that site, and there are all sorts of options including rooms for rent, apartments, and homes for rent.
