Thanks for the comments. Pretty much hit the nail on the head as far as why the military is going with PRK.

Yeah it sucks it's a longer recovery but it's free and I get paid leave for recovery time so I can't beat that with a stick..

I'm getting nervous though..

What's the worst that could go wrong.... I don't think going blind is really a factor but partial blindness I've heard of..
there is less to go wrong with PRK, especially for the middle of the road correction. they say stay off the contacts before the surgery but they give it only a few weeks. dont listen to them, give it a few months.

make sure they give you the eyedrops for the pain. everyone reacts different to these things. for free, paid time off, i'd do it, its a good to have done.

considering you could go under for a correction if the first surgery is not quite there not much can go wrong. ask around but i think after an initial PRK the second corrective operation has to be PRK also, i may be wrong???

I'll be honest i still do experience some "Halo" effect only at night, but i can still drive perfectly. Doc said it will take me a little bit to get that cleared up.

Oh and the worst part of the surgery isn't being awake for it... it's the smell of something burning, then you realize OMG it's my eye!
holy shit they don't put you to sleep??? does it hurt? sting? anything??

and on another note... can your eyes still go bad even after getting this surgery done? (not talking about mistakes or other possible side effects) but over time....

apparently a lot of south american doctors can do medical procedures really cheap. like plastic surgery and laser eye surgery. im a little hesitant about it though. something about 3rd world medicaine makes me uneasy.

I don't think I would be able to trust a doctor in South America to do surgery on something as important as my eyes.

They put local anatsia on your eyes. In all reality you don't feel a thing, but you see everything happening. It was a very big process before hand they had to thoroughly clean my eyes put a several drops in them, so they hold your eyes open with this little device so even if you think you're blinking... or whatever eye remains open. So then all you do is look into the machine see some little red lights and then you hear the laser and smell a little burning then they clean it off with solution and move on to your next eye.

Thankfully I experienced NO pain afterwards at all. I slept a lot that day after the surgery as well as the next day. Can't really read or watch TV.

Now I know some of you are worried about these "third world" countries. For me. I don't see Colombia as a third world country. It's where my family is from, yeah there's poverty like there is here in the states but my family lives pretty good over there and have very good jobs. I see it just like any regular country.

As for the doctor I used, he is well known. All my aunts, uncles, cousins have used him. He was the BEST! Very nice man and he made sure that i was checked 2x's to make sure i qualified for the surgery. I had been using contact lenses for 10 years and because they are a foreign object in your eyes you don't realize but you get sorta inflamated and eye irritation. So he warned me that if i didn't not wear my contact lenses for 3 days, i wouldn't be able to do the surgery. I had to take 2 drops 4x's a day, and i followed directions and took it easy before the surgery he gave me one last check up to make sure i was ok to do it... and he gave me the OK.

Funny thing was while i was doing my surgery there was a girl their also from Florida doing the surgery. So we sat in the waiting room talking in english and found out her mom had also had the surgery so she was now doing it.

It was the best decision i made having it done, and definetly recommend it to all who can get it done... to do it. I even recommend the doctor. I have a couple of friends going with me next year to get it done

Is it true that the cornea never heals? So you basically have the clear lens part of your eye just floating on top of your eyeball after you have the procedure done? I mean they make it a flap right? But if that one connection is ever severed for some reason then you are in big trouble right? To me it seems that the risks are quite high for some cases. The latest I read was that they can make the part of the cornea that is sliced like a manhole cover, so that it drops into the cut instead of just floating around connected by 1 part. This seems like a better solution, but I haven't been keeping up with this for the past 1 year.

Any more comments or experiences?

Thank you.

What??? Of course the cornea heals. That's what makes RK and Lasik effective, the healed corea flattens thus correcting vision.
