i have trouble throwin stuff out like old crt monitors that still work perfectly fine but take up a bunch of space. do u just throw stuff out when it still works?

If you're a packrat, just look at the economics of the situation.

If you have some emotional attachment to the monitor, that's one thing. On the other hand, it's eating a lot of energy. Is it so much that a new LCD will pay for itself in 3 years? If so, get rid of the CRT.

You can apply that to nearly every thing in your house. Just do it.

then don't throw it out. give it away or donate it. if you freelance then you can deduct that.

If something is replaced that still works, we'll give it away, such as the old computer which went to a friend who's not hooked up. A blender and coffeemaker we're put up on internal e-mail at work, since they we're replaced due to a color scheme change.

I prefer to give stuff away, or sell it dirt cheap. Seems a waste to just dump something that works fine.

I donate all my used computers to the local school system. Anything else gets shit canned.

what they dont tell you is your itemized deductions need to be more than the standard deduction. So if you just donate a monitor and claim its $100, dont expect to reap the tax benefits.
