tipping at hotel
the way i see it, businesses (such as restaurants, hotels, etc where tipping is common) are providing people a place to sell their services. most of the time, i personally am an over-tipper, because i understand this concept, and i understand that our tips are what these workers rely on. however, i cannot stand when a wait(person) is constantly late with things, forgetting things, etc providing terrible service, and then undoubtedly expects a great tip for it. they are as much at fault for forgetting what TIPS stands for as the customers. if they want to be paid well for their service, then they should provide good service. i hate when i eat at an expensive restaurant, get lousy service, and still am expected to leave a large tip based solely on the cost of the overpriced food. again, before everyone bitches at me, note that i do understand the concept of tipping, and that most (90% or more) of the time i am an over tipper.
i was never a big tipper till i worked in the industry, now i overtip all the time. not just cuz i have the money too either,...but cuz when i leave i want them to think "there goes a cool guy, i'll remember him"......and it works. even if u never return to the place you are going to,....its nice to feel that the people are gonna be excited when they get the tip
Sillyboy mentioned tipping for room service. My tip is look at your bill first. More and more, I have been running into situation where gratuity is already built into the room service bill. This is on top of the traditional room service fee. There is actually a line item that says xx% gratuity.
We have lately been noting this to the delivery person who's face quickly turns sour. I guess they are disappointed not to be tipped twice.
