i'd like to people's opinion on tivo (preferably those who have tried both). is there an advantage of getting one versus the other? as far as i know, v1 let's you skip commercials vs v2 which has a better interface.

Don't even consider V1 Tivos. Version 2 adds the USB slot and networking capability. Having your Tivo on your home network allows you to get your listings from the Internet instead of tying up your phoneline. With the (now free) Home Media Option on v2 you can play slideshows and MP3 playlists as well as program your Tivo via the Tivo.com site. V2 Tivos also have bigger hard drives in general.
