Is It Too Late?
I played clarient and sax for 15 years, started in 3rd grade and played thru college. It came very easy to me at that age. Then, about 2 years ago, I decided to take up guitar. Lets say I'm just a bit older than 21. It was more difficult, especially since my son started about a year after me and it only took him a month or so to catch me. I need to practice 2x as much as him just to stay even, it just seems to come easier when you're young. And this is coming from someone that knows a whole lot about music formation (ie scales, note formation, timing, etc). In any event, if you want to do it, go for it, no time like the present. BTW, a good instructor will charge anywhere from $20-$40 per half hour.
As a former Music Educator, I can safely tell you it is NEVER too late to learn an instrument. However, as 8 ball said, your learning curve will be slower (your brain is wrapping up it's big developmental push) than a child's.
It'll be frustrating as all get-out, but trust me, it's worth it. The feeling you get when it finally "sounds like the song on the radio," is priceless. Then, the feeling you get when you "just play" and the idea comes from "nowhere," is even better. . .
Go for it!
