Default Topeka KS vs. Miami FL....

I have been at my current job for almost 7 years. It is an awesome job and I enjoy it very much. Lately however, there has been some management re-organization that has caused some key-people to leave. Last year I got hit with a paycut but was able to make it with the help of bonuses throughout the year. They have increased the amount of red-tape tremendously in order to be more "organized" but frankly this is simply slowing things down and making us less profit.

I survived it last year in hopes that this year might be different but, on my yearly review, they had given me a further paycut eventhough and further increase my goals in order to meet my bonuses. I am not willing to settle for this and had started to pursue other opportunities.

I have a job offer in Miami Florida and they are offering me about 20% more. Based on what I have found out, the "actual" cost of living is a bit higher in Miami but not by a whole lot..unless you go to South Beach every other night!

Everytime I go to Miami I never really have a chance to enjoy it much as it is always in and out and just for business.

Miami or around Miami people....what are the things you like most about the area and the things that you like the least?

Also....how the HECK do you roll over a 401 K plan?

Thanks!!

Angel

Having not been to Miami, I can still say this.
At least you won't have to worry about snow.

Angel,
Sorry to hear things are going downhill at work. I just took a 10% pay cut myself. Maybe you should take an extended weekend & go to Miami for a little play time & check out the housing?

Angel, the paycut sucks and hope that you find a way to work things out. Sometimes a move/change can be a good thing. I was in a similar spot about 2yrs ago and the new direction for me has been great.

401k can easily be rolled into a IRA or new company 401k with the help of a finacial adv or your new company (who may have a financial adv who works with them to set up and manage the 401k program for them). You WILL however need to find out if you are fully vested and what % of your current 401k can be taken with you. If you have been working for them for that long it is quite possible you are fully (100%) vested and it would pose no problem for you.

Good luck

Paul

I moved to Charlotte from Nebraska and I am very happy that I did. And being fairly familiar with Miami I thought I would pass on a couple of items to note:

- Work ethic: there is a definite shift of balance between work and play, with more emphasis on play; but the work style on the east coast is much faster paced than the mid-west.

- Weather: I do not know about you but I got very tired of the winters lasting anywhere from Sept. to April. Miami weather allows for outdoor activity all year long, (translation: driving with the top down most of the time!) and its cheap to fly if you want to go to the mountains should you get a winter snow craving.

- Cost of Living: It is a lot more expensive to live in Miami, and I am not talking just about South Beach either. Talk to several realtors to get a good idea. Also, your new company should provide you with a relocation specialist to help out as well.

- Culture: I think you will really enjoy the different cultural influences. I hate to say it but the mid-west is still very white bread. It is so nice to walk down a street and hear 2 to 3 different languages. And, again, its cheap to fly to NYC, Philly, DC and other countries than it is from the Mid-west.

I'm proud of being from the mid-west but at this time of my life I just prefer what the east coast offers. Happy decision making!

Z06-KILLR, I moved to Miami from San Francisco when I was 10. I love it down here. There is definitely a lot of emphasis on play... work hard, play harder. Theres a lot of do here... bars, clubs, the women, oh yea the women. The weather is nice and warm all year around, no snow to shovel. The cost of living isn't too bad, but then again I've never been to Kansas so I can't really compare, but I guess its average for a big city. I could send you over some apartment links so you can compare.

Anyways if you need help, more information or answers to something specific, let me know.

Mark,

I am just a bit frustrated as this is the 2nd year in a row they are trying to pull this off. I love my job but sometimes it is time to say....oh well...I am still undecided but Miami is definitely sounding better by the minute.

Ninegrand,

Thanks for the advice...I am 80% vested right now and if I hang on until August, then I can be fully vested...I think I can definitely put it off until then, so when it starts getting cold around here, I could migrate south

Huskergirl,

Very good points. Charlotte was my very first choice but I could not find a job in the area that could pay me what I need to make...though I still have a couple of alternatives.

Mav,

Thanks for the offer. I might have to take you up on it. I am a bit nervous about all this. I am 28, have worked at the same company for almost 7 years and a change of this magnitud makes the hair on my back stand up. I guess I would not need the Suby down there for the winter....

Decisions decisions....

Strange.......

Today my boss congratulates me on the terrific year we have had, specially at meeting monthly, quarterly and yearly goals.....so I sarcatically (very) mentioned to him the fact that next year I would make sure that won't happened again as it did not lead to anything positive on my end .....hehe.

He called me in right before closing and I thought, oh hell....maybe I shouldn't have made that comment. He told me they had discussed the paycut and that they were not going to make it effective, and further emphasized the fact that I was needed, appreciated and that they were willing to work out any issues that were pending. On my review, I did not even put up a fight. I just smiled and said "I don't agree but once again, I will have to figure things out".

....do you think they went over my computer files and found my "on the works resignation letter" on my drafted docs.?

This makes my decision a whole lot harder. I played a little hard ball with the company in Miami, Florida and asked for a few more things. They are going to get back with me on Monday evening with their final/best offer.

This is all very exciting and nerve-wrecking at the same time......
