I'd go to court. $800 for that is ridiculous. Stupid cop probably had a bad day or something.

When did this happen? Was towards the end of April?

Yeah, somehow paying $300 for a lawyer to get him out of this mess seems pretty reasonable.

Not sure if this is the case in your state but many states have had a hard time balancing budgets. Lots of deficits out there. Instead of raising taxes, they have tried to fund lots of things, like the court system by jacking up fines to unreal amounts.

In my state, spreeding tickets can be well over $100 when the fees and fines are added up. getting your license reinstated after a DUI is up over $300, and the reinstatement is not even part of the fines for the DUI itself. For politicians it is easier to raise fines on an offender than it is to generate general tax revenue.

Many cities now see it as a way get cash because they keep some of the fine money so they hand out as many fines as they can just for kicks, much in the same way that local municipalities put up red light cameras at stoplights and then shorten the duration of the yellow light to create more red light runners.

Stay on your toes or you can get some hefty fines.

Actually unless he took photos, put the stock airbox back in and take the top off. Take pictures and then put the top back on and take pictures. Then you can say the top was just off and he assumed it was an aftermarket intake (this is actually what a good cop buddy of mine recommended, because without pics he cant prove otherwise), Take pictures of the exhaust and then take a printed out parts sheet from a honda dealership with the exhaust tips on it. These two major errors on his part would give your buddy some creadibility towards talking down the unsafe start charge. Your best bet for that one would be looking at the pavement at which the unsafe start was made. Take pictures (notice pictures are very very important when fighting tickets) of the surface, id recommend arguing that the surface is oily, or was recently re-paved or very slick and that the limited slip differential in teh vehicle cause one wheel to slip while the otehr had traction causing a chirping noise. Obviously there was no excessive speed so it was not like there was a danger involved, it was just a misconception and it is a common occurance on this vehicle due to the LSD.

I think with the right wording and presentation, as well as documentation to back up your arguments you could get everything dismissed, hell its worth a try atleast.

(BTW: I do know a lot of this is B.S. but the cop and the judge dont really know that, and thats the angle you shoudl work)
