Could try this registry fix.

Repair/Replace Recycle Bin Reg Fix

This is a direct link to the registry file. It's highly recommended to back up your registry before doing anything to it. Try merging this reg file, then reboot.

(if xp),
right click on your taskbar, properties
click start menu tab
bubble in classic start menu. if it's already classic, then click on start menu, apply or ok, then switch it back to your original. classic start menu will give you my computer, recycle bin, etc on your desktop.

no, messed up would be to tell a Mac user to type "sudo rm -rf /" in a terminal to reset permissions/wireless connection/send email/etc.
