Can anyone recommend a nice inexpensive tripod for a canon S60.

Thanks

You can't go wrong with Bogen/Manfrotto tripod systems, but those are in the $300 - $500 range.

For some cheaper ones. Check out Benbo ($200 - $300) or Bushnell (< $100)

A buddy of mine has a Bogen/Manfrotto tripod/head combo. I'm pretty sure it's the 755MF3.

It worked great for the first couple days of filming. Then after a fair amount of readjusting the center column leveling ball lock we actually unthreaded the screw from the bottom of the ball. It wasn't hard to fix, but a $500 tripod shouldn't have that sort of design issue. I suppose it was built that way for complete disassembly for maintenance.

It's scary when you have a $6000 DV camera on top and it leans way over by itself threatening to tip over. I don't think the XL2 was actually heavy enough to tip the tripod from tilting, but it's still unnerving.

200 was a little to much for me at this time -- I just bought a Cannon S60 (very excited) + got some genertic 50 dollar tripod that goes up to 6 feet + 512Mb Extreme Scandisk flash card + AC adapter. Can't wait to take some professional looking pictures (once I get the hang of it).

My dad actually has a very nice tripod that he gave to my uncle that I am going to try to get back. It was bought in japan about 10 years ago at over 500 dollars not sure of the brand.

Thanks for all the advice

Regards,
Jonathan

I didn't pay THAT much for a Bogen 3021Pro with their small ball head. Highly recommended. A cheap tripod is such a pain you end up not using it.

Since you've got a cheapie now, you can improve its stability by hanging some weight on it. And try not to raise the center extension (use leg-locks only).
