TSUNAMI ALERT
We just had a BIG earthquake (7.4 from preliminary reports) off the coast of N. California. Much of the west coast is under tsunami watch.
if there is a tsunami, I'm sure it won't be anywhere near as overwhelming as the Asian one since this earthquake is less than 1/10th the strength of that earthquake, but anybody near the shore should be careful anyway.

listening to NPR, the tsunami warning was just cancelled. this type of earthquake apparently is a "strike-slip" with only lateral earth movement, rather than the vertical movement that it takes to produce tsunamis.
phew!
phew!
