I only worked for half the year (started the job in June), so my gross was much smaller than it really should be.
Uh, yeah, that's great...but it had nothing to do with TurboTax. You shoulda been able to figure that out on your own, without $50 tax software....

It also found several moving expenses (I moved from PA to CA) that I did not know were deductible. Plus, I paid an arm and a leg to register my car here in CA and it let me deduct a large portion of that as well.

And Stack, why the hate? I was just excited to get a lot of money back that I did not know I was eligible for.

I'm going to owe $10k or so, so I'm not filing until 4/14. I intentionally like owing the maximum possible without getting into a penalty scenario, so it was all planned.

If you're getting big refunds, you need to adjust your withholdings on your paycheck or your estimated tax payments.

So you are NOT taking the standard deduction? I dunno, man, doesn't sound right to me.

It's not "hate" (goddammit people sound like 5y/o gangsta rappers when they talk like that,) it's the fact that your story doesn't make sense. I'm an accountant. I can virtually guarantee that a no-house-owning, single recent college grad with no dependants doesn't have more than $5k in deductions to itemize, which you'd have to to beat the standard deduction. Telling an accountant that is like telling a doctor you lost 50lbs taking a pill. MAYBE it happened, but it's so unlikely that it makes us skeptical.

I dunno Quikag, I kind of like getting some "surprise money" every year that I can inject into the portfolio or stow away for a downpayment on a house one day. I'll forego a few hundred each month to get a lump back every spring.

I use the free taxslayer website. Free > $50 or whatever TT costs.

Stack, I am also an accountant, (Well cost accountant). My point is that I would have never filed for several of my relocation deductions had I not had the software ask me for it. I did not know these items were deductible. Add in student loan interest (a lot), Hope Lifetime of about $1500, and some other miscellaneous shit along with it, and I got a nice return. I am still confused as to why my state was so large. I have never gotten anything back from PA, but CA gave me a lot...?

You sacrificed $333/mo ($416 if you count your $1k in state taxes.) That's a car payment, or a full year's contribution to a 401(k.) It's like saying "I enjoy getting kicked in the balls because when the pain goes away I feel better."
