Yeah I did claim 0. Well, I guess I might as well enjoy the check this year since next year will be a whole different story At least I can inject some life into the portfolio

I'll pay my $10 tax burden ($120 owed to Fed - $110 from State) by brownbagging it tomorrow.

I'm scared to use the Canadian version of those applications because I feel my situation is somewhat unique and convoluted. I relocated mid-year to a province that has seriously lower taxes, which apparently (per my boss, colleague, and two friends who did the same one year prior) qualifies me for far greater rebates due to having moved here for a portion of the year. Also, I incurred a few expenses in the move related to vehicle registrations and inspections, etc.

Am I naive to think the software won't properly account for these or should I give it a shot? Most of them seem to have guarantees such as "Maximum deduction guaranteed or blah blah blah"

I don't. I'm not a tax accountant either. I am corporate.

I just file my own taxes, and have for about 10 years now, so I know what I'm looking at.

I had a similar situation. I moved to the USA for four months and worked, came back, went to school, changed homes, and also worked in Canada...all in one year. TurboTax handled it just fine for me.

For a move, remember that you can charge meals ($15 per meal, I think?) for weeks prior to and/or after the move to cover for your not having a house/residence set up to cook meals and such. That adds up - nearly $50 a day for 21 days. Take a look at the Revenue Services Canada bulletin on moving expenses - there are a few little nuggets in there that you can claim to boost your return.

I claim my wife and daughter as dependents, even though my wife works full time now. We still got back a few grand this year, mainly because my wife didn't work the full year. This year, it should pretty much even out since she'll be working full time, the full year. We might get a grand or so back but that's not worth making a change to my withholdings, really.
