Default Turn A/C off with engine?

Opinions please:

Should we turn off the A/C compressor before shutting off the engine? I've always heard that leaving the A/C on puts extra stress on the starter. Do you think this to be true or is this an automobile "urban legend"? thanks. Tommy

I've heard the same thing. I turn it off just in case. Better to be safe than sorry.

In my old car 93 Saturn, when I turned it on when the A/C was on, it would make the worst noises and sometimes not start. I think it is a stress on the engine, can't hurt to have it off, just for that reason alone.

I've heard that leaving on your air, radio, wipers, etc. puts extra stress on your battery the next time you start your car. I try turn everything off, so the only thing pulling power from the battery is the starter.
