They look fun. Have you ever flown a plane? I'd at least get a recreational pilot's license even though it's not required.

Another thing to look at is the gyroplane/gyrocopter. I think I'd prefer that.

^ Thanks Jeff, any recommendations for something not enclosed. Im thinking of possible aerial photography while up there and the enclosure looks to be inhibiting.

No but lessons in the ultralight would be on the must do list.

Hey Zip, probably the Phantom UL would be the best "open", but I really prefer the engine in pusher mode for the quiet factor.
I think you need an Autogyro. I know I do.
Whatever you choose, make sure you only go with a ballistic chute attached. Too many weird close calls.
Bud of mine was way high, coming home from a fly-in, and scanned the wing, and saw the hinge wire backing out of the aileron. He went real smooth... but came close a couple times to killing the engine/(prop), and firing off the chute.
He did crash twice, both times cayuna engine probs. Changed to Rotax, and never had another prob.

^ Rotax are solid engines

IF anyone is in the NJ area I can take ya up in a 172, I have flown an Ultralight but dont have access to one

here's what I usually fly

Seriously though, the greatest feeling I have ever had has been flying in an ultralight or an open cockpit airplane, really is amazing.............

On the subject of flying, I was in a 737-400 yesterday flying from Charlotte to Philly and we had a lightning strike to the fuselage right outside my widow in row 4. It scared the crap out of us as it was a huge loud and bright blast. I really thought something in the cargo hold blew up. It was very intense. A few people were yelling, and the look of panic on the flight attendent was disturbing.
I'd be good if that never, ever happens again.
