Default An Uncomfortable Request

Hey guys -

I have a situation at work where the COO, who my immediate supervisor (an SVP) reports to, has asked me to do a secret

it's tough being an underling, isn't it?!

i'd probably end up going along with CEO... since he is higher up.

the same sort of situation happened with me... a lot of my co-workers and my direct supervisor have been encouraging me to join our union, and i've been really hesistant cause i know most of the management higher up in the company do not like the union. i'm still really new (disposable) so i'm taking my sweet time trying to decide.

i'm confused. are you saying that the ceo and the coo are different people? or is that just a typo? or are they one in the same? anyway, i'd do as the higher up requested, and definitely keep it on the low. as long as you're cool with the ceo/coo, why should you place much emphasis on what the svp thinks?

btw happy birthday.

Always go with the higher rank. If in trouble, you can blame him and have his support. The lower rank will have to submit.

Ask for more money to do the secret project.

Do it. Document EVERYTHING. Keep a journal that is handwritten (not typed), and keep it up-to-date. Make sure to write down your feelings too (i.e. That you are reluctant to perform the task, but will anyway because it is the request of the COO). Write down any suspicious behavior, but leave out any illegal details unless you are immediately going to report the behavior to the authorities.

That's my advice.

Thanks for all of the advice, guys - definitely going to keep a record of the entire event. CYA is the acronym I'm going to have to abide by here...
