+1 for CYA. Get at least an e-mail from that head cheese. Office politics suck. In that situation I'd be tempted to let my boss find out about the project without directly spilling the beans. How good are you at hints?

If you ever want to move into management don't join. If you just want fairly good pay, job security, and little advancement, join the union.
