Gym memberships don't help much if you don't go. You need dedication, time, and good equipment. Get a good home system, some extra free weights, and some bars and you're good to go.

I have no regrets, even though I spent about $2600 for everything, I use it. And at $800 for my annual gym membership, it pays for itself in about three years. Have fun with the project.
I actually have a Bowflex Motivator; I quite like it. Got it about 5 years ago with the overhead pulley and leg attachment. Paid about $1000.
