UNIX and DVD-RW's
Unix data stored on DVD ? is this possible ?
Does anyone know how to format HP-UX 10.20 (yup, that flavour of unix) data to enable me to burn the data on a DVD burner HPi100 running on NT ?
thanks for any suggestions

yes it will be for archiving and the DVD's that will house the data will be used for storage. They are already "tar'd" onto these dat tapes.
I am not that familiar in using gzip, but from what I know I think gzipping from the unix server may not be the problem as I assume it will compress it and make it into a different extension ".gz" ?
From here do I do a further tar to a "shared folder" or directory that can be easily made ? Then using Samba be able to see the directories on the DVD box ? and then burn ?
Then how would I restore the data back from DVD if they case came up ?
thanks for your help again

What if I use the gzip command and gzipped the data from the archive tapes producing them in .gz extensions to a folder on my server ?
Then map a drive to it from the dvdwriter box and have the choice of burning them as .gz or .zip ( if .zip, they could be converted using 3rd party software)
A 3rd party software such as WinZip or something like Powerarchiver (http://www.powerarchiver.com/features/ ) (http://www.powerarchiver.com/screenshots/) can be used ?
Then if the day came to view the information, could I not use this same 3rd party software ?
Or use an x-windows session, to send things back to a unix box per say ?
thanks again
