Upgradin' CPU + MOBO.. suggestions?
I've been surfin' around the net to upgrade my cpu and mobo.... im leaning toward athlon 64 3400 and found this DEAL on tigerdirect.."Abit AV8 VIA Socket 939 ATX Motherboard and AMD Athlon 64 3400+ Processor with 512MB DDR Memory.." it seems like a pretty reasonable deal to me.. but does anyone kno of any compatibility issues of this 939 socket 3400?.. is it a good deal? any other recommandations besides this? my budget is around $300-400.. thx in advance..
First ahtlon 64 chips are great. The winchester chipset (for 939 mobo's) runs a lot cooler then the first generation of amd 64+ processers. I myself have a 3200+ amd 64 on a abit av8. The av8 is a great bargain. Although some controversy arised from abit's designer leaving for DFI. The motherboard is still a badass motherboard. I've o/c mine and running rock stable. Their are lots of other motherboards i can recommend, but it all depends on the money situation. Bang for buck abit av8 is a great buy. Asus has a good board for similar price. Check at newegg.com. I buy majority of my pc parts their.
I have corsair's XMS 2-2-2 400mhz ram. 2 sticks of 512's. You mention only 512, then you should get 2 sticks of 256. Otherwise get $265 bucks and get 2 sticks of 512s. You have dual channel, take use of it. Dual channel can be easily searched on it's advantages.
I spent roughly 650 bucks 2 months ago on my processor/mobo/ram upgrade.
Specs on computer:
Skyhawk Aluminum Case
Ultra 500watt power supply.
ABIT AV8 Mobo
AMD (winchester) 3200+ processor (2.0ghz)
2 512 Corsair XMS 2-2-2
ATI Radeon 9700pro
2 SATA HD's.
Lite-On cd/dvd/rw
I plan to upgrade my video card in the next few months once ati drops their price.
If you need more suggestions talk to via PM. I'm always reading hardocp, anandtech, virtual-hideout.net reviews.
...and yes i'm a computer geek. I like my computers fast like my cars

I'm a geek too. I'd wait until Microsoft releases there new 64bit operating system (not the beta) before getting that AMD. It's unfortunate that Microsoft and Intel are playing this game holding up 64bit chips basically because Intel can't get its shit together damn itanium fvcked everything up.
