Vacation in D.C.
You can beat the obvious... Smithsonian Museums. The Air & Space is my favorite.
Head over to Georgetown for some places to eat. There's a bunch that are semi-alfresco where they open up the front of the building (if it's not too hot). I've eaten at J. Pauls which is pretty good. I haven't stayed there, so I can't help you there.

Expensive dining: the Prime Rib
Somewhat expensive dining: Sequoias (spelling)
Definitely check out GTown on the weekend nights, usually tons of cars up and down it. (M Street)
Or you could check out MIR on Friday Nights and Summerduck on Sunday nights for the Imports =)

For sights, you can't go wrong staying close to the Mall. A beautiful place ringed with museums and monuments and all free. For the unusual, you could find the Walter Reed Medical Museum which houses various body parts, organs, severed limbs and evil looking medical tools. My favorite is the elephantiasis leg floating in a giant jar of formaldehyde.
For fun, G-town is OK, but there's also a downtown restaurant/bar district around K,L, M and 17th to 20th streets (NW).
To stay, you might want to look at Rosslyn, VA. which is right across the bridge from G-town and a 10 minute Metro ride to the Mall.
As for Sen. Jeffords, he's my new best friend....
