I want to plan a trip to New York at the end of April next year for a week - 10 days, but I'm a university student so I can't be shacking up at the Westin Hotel or anything like that. Plus the fact that the Canadian $$ sucks and a buck in Canada is worth like a penny US. Haha.

What are some good places to stay in New York that are affordable to students and still easy to get to the main city (for shopping, touristy things) by transit/subway?

My friend recommended the YMCA, but that's a little budget and I'd only stay there as a last resort. I'll probably have 2-3 friends along with me so we can always split hotel room costs.

Are there any suggestions/tips people from that area can give?

babygrass,

You might want to check out Hotels or Motels in the Queens area really close to Manhattan (fastest by subway). That's where I live and I could get to the city in 20-25 mins. (I work in Midtown Manhattan).
