Vegas
i stay at the venitian twice a year for conferences. i've never ventured out past the casino or conference floor/parties except for the star trek thing at some hotel. IT RULED!!!!!! if you even just watch the show occasionally it's fun. i think this june i might go outside, i hear there's a whole city there!
For the record, the two Cirque du Soleil shows are Mystere (pronounced mis-tair) and O. The name O is a play on eau (pronounced "o"), the French word for water, since it is a water-based performance.
Mystere is awesome, we've seen it three times. We had really crappy seats for O.

After you've been dazzled by the strip and if you feel like slumming, grab a cab and go downtown. It's been many years since I was there, but many of the smaller casinos played single-deck blackjack with $2 minimums. This can be fun if you've lost your a$$ out on the strip. Downtown also has some good Italian restaurants in the old New York Mafia motif.
I was in Vegas about 15 times last year and stayed at a different place each time (business of course), my favorite place is the Venetian, all rooms are large (i guess they call them suites), NY NY is nice to walk through but have not stayed there. If you like to gamble, I had my best luck at Bellagio and Venetian...mostly craps some blackjack. The restaruant across from NY NY is awesome, I believe it is called Wollensky and Smith. If you love steaks you will love that place. Most of the action is from the middle of the strip down to where you are at. Have a great time!!
Vegas is just the most ridiculous place on earth, I love it!
I guess the average IQ of both inhabitants and visitors (I said average, so don't take it personal) is close to 50. When I was there a few years ago, they were building the Venetian and the Paris, and as we passed in front of the Paris, my cab driver (some ZZtop-looking guy) mentioned something about my home town, I just nodded in agreement, but 5 minutes later when we were in front of the Venetian, he asked me if Venezia was in FRANCE!!
I spent 3 days (business) laughing out loud just by watching people in the "street", eating "food" and making comments on "architecture".
Hoover dam was very impressive though.

Unless I missed it, I can't believe none of the car enthusiasts here suggested a visit to The Imperial Palace Auto Collections located at the Imperial Palace Hotel and Casino!

Stephen I just went to see "O" in November so here's a tip. Try to get seats in the 200 section (202,203,204) That way most of the action is eye level and below. If you wind up with seats in the lower rows of the 100 level you will find that you will miss out on a lot of stuff and strain your neck looking up. But I think it was about $120 a ticket when I went. This is one show where being in the front row is not better.
Rent a Viper and driver out to Hoover Dam. Go to a gun range and rent a machine gun. Thats what I always do during the day...that and sleeping off hangovers. If you want to go to a club the Ra in the Luxor is pretty cool.
