Default A very disturbing fact...

I was doing my twice annual grocery shopping today (don't ask) and I was both shocked and amazed to find something that I still haven't quite been able to come to terms with. One of my favorite snacks at night is the venerable grilled cheese sandwich - it's comfort food, as I have eaten them ever since I can remember. And it seems, and I could very well be wrong about this, that the best GCS's are made with Kraft Singles. These tasty bits something resembling cheese are always a hit.

Now, for the disturbing part...

I saw on the package that each slice of our beloved Kraft product...each slice is made with a whopping 2% real milk.

OK, call me a purist, as I love cheese of all varieties and in my admittedly somewhat limited culinary experience, I have always considered cheese to be something that is made ENTIRELY from milk. And moreover, since this is the case, I think it's bad marketing to actually publicize that your product which in just about every previous generation of cheese has been made wholly from milk and milk by-products.

Now, welcome to Hell, we have cheese that is 98% something BESIDES milk. This puts a whole new (and scary) twist on my late night pal known as the grilled cheese sandwich.

I think I'm going to have switch...any suggestions? But first, I will have to somehow make it through an entire 16 slice pack of Kraft Singles, knowing that 98% of each slice is not milk. My friends, I'm nervous about that proposition...

Can't you buy real cheese in America, you know, the stuff you slice with a knife?

I am sorry, but grilled cheese sandwiches must have cracker barrel medium cheese cut to perfection.

Grilled cheese sandwiches MUST be made with a strong cheddar cheese, not slices of yellowish goo that bear no resemblance to cheese except in their name .....

Greg,

You should visit your local quality deli and get a cheese tasting session. I am a cheese addict and as far as I am concerned, you should have no problem finding the real thing. So many cheese varieties, not enough time...

I love aged, imported Italian Provolone. Munster is excellent in a cheese sandwich. Holland offers two of my favorites, Edam and Gouda. Leerdammer and Maasdam are excellent, too. A French Brie, such as Brie de Meaux and Brie de Meaux are worth checking out. Swiss cheese is nice, such as Finlandia Swiss or Tete de Moine. I could go on but I need to warn you that you will need a very good cheese knife to get started.

Enjoy!

I forgot to mention Tillamook Cheddar. A great American cheese from the coast of Oregon. Excellent for GCS!

greg,

my first suggestion to you is to stop eating anything late night, its very unhealthy and you can gain weight very easily eating that late at night, especially something so fatening as grilled cheese sandwich... change to eating carrots at night

May I suggest that you eat hot dogs as your snack instead? You know what's in those things...
