Acquiring and permitting the rights-of-way is the killer.
Also, the rail itself has a slower depreciation curve, so that mitigates some costs.

This might surprise you, but I don't think a train conductor is actually the same as a music conductor.
riding that kind of speed on ground's gotta be cool, i rode on both japanese bullet trains (Nozomi, faster than regular) and french TGV, i would have to say the Jap Nozomi is a lot quieter and more comfortable.
I had a gps speedometer once when riding on a TGV (le Mans -> paris) and it was going almost constantly 295km/h-300km/h
