Waiting for PS3?

Does the X360 play XBox games? Does the PS3 play PS and PS2 games? I read the PS3 supports 1080i definition - not sure about the X360 though. I'm interested in being able to play my legacy games on a new system too.
Some of the less popular games may become compatible on the 360 with emulator software updates from Xbox live. And to be backwards compatible you need the $400 system with hard drive OR the $300 "core" system with a $100 harddrive add on.
I have only tried a few old xbox disks on the 360 and they all worked. Some of the graphics, especially cut scenes, improve on the 360. With a VGA cable and quality computer monitor the graphics are unreal.
I think the big difference was not in 1080i playback but the fact that PS3 can provide 1080p output.
I'd imagine that when XBOX comes out with the HDDVD, they will have some way of providing that as well, but there is no confirmation yet. If it stays 720p/1080i it will be clearly inferior for displaying hd movies.
