Default watching downloaded movies on your DVD player

I downloaded a movie from Kazaa. It is in .avi format. I burned the file to a CDR and tried to play it in my DVD player. It doesn't play. Can anyone help with this? Am I suppose to convert it to another format or something first?

thanks!

Yes, you will need to convert the file into a different format for playback on a set top DVD player.

Good news is that in a year most set top DVD players will support Windows Media Player 8 format.

Bad News is that if you want to do this right now...

.AVI is a Windows Audio/Visual format. Microsoft Windows comes with an encoder/decoder to encode or playback .AVI files. DVD players do not support this format. DVD players can decode MPEG-2 files but require a ISO compliant image on the disc to recognize it. HUH? The disc and the video file will have to be encoded via software to playback properly.

Guess what? I been down this rocky road before.

You have the choice of Two formats. Assuming that you do not own a DVD Burner, you'll want to encode the .AVI file into VCD format. Do a an internet search on VCD encoders and I am sure a free product will pop up. Alternately, I've been using a product called Pinnacle Express ($50) to encode DVD's but it also works for VCD's. All you will need is the .AVI file, the encoder, and a CD-ROM burner to make VCD's.

If you run into trouble, feel free to shoot me a PM.

Not all DVD players will play vcd's!

Make sure yours does before buying any software...

You need an editor than can convert .AVI to VCD. DiVX? Ok, now its almost complicated. .AVI is a standard, but within that standard are multiple encoder/decoders. Some software may choke if they do not support other decoders. Intel Indio 4.5 I think is the most common format, but I don't see why an editor would freak if you have the correct decoder installed.
