I was just walking the halls at work when I noticed one of those you-are-here-here's-how-you-get-out-in-a-fire floorplan signs on the wall. The floorplan was oriented so that North was on top. However, the sign was on a West wall, so it might have be less confusing if the sign has West on top: up is straight ahead, right is right, left is left, down is behind you.

So I put it to the sagacious minds of my fellow s2kiers: is it clearer to have North on top always, or to have the direction you're facing on top?

Why would it matter? Screw semantics! Just locate the nearest exit.
Seriously, it seems logical to have the direction you're facing on top.

Up should always be a fixed point, regardless of where you are.. so I pick north
