Ways to find out a company's hiring policies
Hey,
I will probably have to find a job at a new company shortly, and was wondering if there is a way to find out a companies outlook on whether or not to hire a person who may have a felony.
If I can't find a good job, I'll probably just go get a master's/ph.d. while I wait to get this off my record, but I'd rather be working and having a company that would pay for my school.
Any info is appreciated...

The companies that I've worked for in the past would not hire anyone who could not pass a background check. Most will now combine that with a drug test. Depending on what your felony is you may be able to talk to the HR dept. and tell them the truth and have an exception made. I'm afraid in most cases the chances are slim with most larger companies.
It was said above. It depends on what the felony is and how honest you are about it. What happens is when they run a background check through an agency (like Choicepoint), they will check your name, address, social security, and criminal history. If something doesn't match they will get a flag.
If you have a record, it has to be reviewed and approved by the HR Manager before they will proceed with any further step of the hiring process.
If you did something violent or dishonest (rape, aggrevated assault, fraud, embezzlement, repeated DUI's) where you knew what you were doing or did something repeatedly, it will very difficult to find something in a large corporation.
If it was something that was not premeditated and was simply a moment of bad judgment, you might have a chance.
Hope this helps.

Yea, I've always been upfront with all the jobs I've applied for. (Not that many, worked with 3-4 diff. companies?)
It was not violent or dishonest. It was blown out of proportion by the accusations made by the arresting officer, and I am most likely going to end up taking a plea deal and I'll be on deferred adjudication, so it's basically like I have a felony (at least to hiring companies) till the probation period is over.
