Default Web Hosting Question

What is the difference between a Unixed based and Windows based package? I won't have to directly interface with Unix will I? I just upload the files to the website and it should go shouldn't it? I really don't know anything about doing this so info would be great, thanks.

If the server is run and maintained by someone else, which sounds like the case, then there's no real difference, because the implementation details are transparent to everyone except the guy that actually runs the server.

Yup, what cyber said. Differentiate between default and index.

The only major concern would be the tools you might be using to build the site. For the most part if you are just using HTML you'll be good with either, however, if you want to use FrontPage (still HTML, but a special Microsoft tool to make managing the site "easier") to build your site then you'll want to get on the Windows box. If you plan on doing any coding, or installing message boards, etc, there is more of that type of software for free on unix platforms. Unix boxes are more robust and will be able to handle more traffic, but if you're on a shared box, I'm guessing you aren't anticipating too much traffic anyways right?

Either way you go, you can download an FTP program like WS_FTP or CuteFTP for free and won't have to type commands to either box if you don't want to. Good luck!

I also believe you can not use ASP or ASP.NET on a unix box. Correct me if I'm wrong? I don't believe most Windows based servers support JSP either. So like riceburner said, it becomes an issue depending on how you will implement your web pages, and what technologies you know or want to learn.
