this is going to be tough because gun ownership is different in almost every state.

http://www.floridafirearmslaw.com/

this guy is no joke here in FL and helps train LEO on FL law. he also discusses reciprocal states as they pertain to FL. His knowledge is vast and his teachings are straight forward. but again... this book is geared toward ownership in FL

Poke around on gun forums and see what people are suggesting as good resources for CA

Nearly all guns are very low maintenance, just spend 15 minutes cleaning after you shoot.

Might help to let everyone know why you want a gun. Target practice, concealed carry, home defense, zombie attack?

not ccw but everything else

(i think its very difficult if not impossible to get a ccw license in CA for civilian unless your job requires you to do that)

might help to define what you are wanting to learn.

cleaning, use and maint. can be solved with going to the gun store, range or club and simply getting in front of people and asking.

Ownership is quite a different thing and is shaped by the person owning it. What you intend to do with it will determine the kind of information you will want to seek out and what you ultimately will do with the firearm.

Saying "everything but CCW" is way to broad a scope for us to tell you a good course of action.

A match grade/target gun owner is going to handle, store and use their gun very differently from a person wanting to protect their home or go quail hunting 3 times a year for example....see what I am saying?

If this is your first real experience with guns in general, I suggest you get around a few and learn how to handle them in general before you do anything. Shooting daddy's 410 when you were twelve years old is not the same as buying and owning them responsibly.

Not slamming you, just saying the obvious stuff

first real question is what do you want out of your gun.

Accuracy?
number of rounds before reload?
effective range?
Dependability
revolver, semi auto, rifle, shotgun?
quality, price range, collectiblity
vintage, used, new
is there a type of ammo you like or want to avoid (center fire, rim fire, black powder)?........

The list goes on and on...before you even look at serious purchase.

Spend some time defining what you want out of [your gun and owning it and there are PLENTY of people in here that can give you days of advice on almost every aspect of it.

it would be for range / target practice and home defense. not looking for high end or collectable. just something more practical, reliable and "good buy".

people also recommend going to the range and rent before buying to get a feel of what i am getting into. but i would also like to get an idea of "what money can buy" before i try to narrow it down.

i am thinking about hand gun. and i want to factor in the cost of ownership, how much maintenance it requires, how easy it is to handle and fire, etc. and also the same old question of semi-auto vs revolver.

and i also looking into training course for shooting
