What is the best/efficient way to start learning a new language ?

Best way to learn a new language as an adult....is what RAJ said.....immersion....however, finding a person isnt the proper way. The proper way is to live or visit for a while, the appropriate country.

Immersion is the best (IMO and others) but there is one draw back. Reading and writing. Alot of languages are not written how they sound and some use symbols not in the English alphabet. Readign and writing may become a second step in the learning of a language.

I say this becasue I know a kid who went "backpacking though South America" and stayed at a farm in Brazil for about a year, working on the farm, living on the farm and the only outside contact was going to the local pub.

When he came back he spoke the language fluently (Portueguese), so his father bought him this great book on Brazillian history written in Portuguese. The kid had no way to read it as he hadnt ever read Portuguese other than the the signs in the pubs and the names of the horses. Just some food for thought.

p.s. This kid was an idiot before he left, and a Portuguese speaking idiot when he returned, so this may not be the case for you, but just something to think about.
