What causes people to become diebetic?
i think a fair amount of it has to do with lifestyle.
Most Diabetic people i know are lazy, overweight and eat the wrong things... and some of them smoke......
I have heard a small (very small %) are none of those things and it is genetic.....

I am type II (maturity onset) and here is how it was explained to me:
Lets say you grow up eating a certain amount of starches and carbohydrates (sugars or things eventually converted to sugars like fat if you are inactive). During that time the pancreas adjusts its production of insulin to combat the levels of sugars in your blood. it does this so well in fact, that it begins to produce this demand of insulin everytime it recieves information from the brain that carbohydrates are coming down the chute.
Well the brain does not know how much carbs and such are coming, it just sends a signal to support organs that certain food types are coming and the other organs begin to do their thing.
Well the pancreas does not know if a fully loaded baked potato is coming or a single piece of dry toast so it begins to produce the amount of insulin it believes it is going to need whether or not a flood of carbs is coming or a trickle. It just gets into a habit of producing a certain amount and does this whether it needs to or not when the signal comes down.
this causes the person to eventually become diabetic because the cells in your body become resistant to flood of insulin or the cells that make insulin in your pancreas become "fatigued" and can no longer produce the amount needed for the cells to convert and carry the carbs to their need areas.
hope that helps a bit
here is a decent srting link for type II:

I was diagnosed in 2002. I went to a family event a couple months later with 6 of my father's siblings. 5 of them were diabetic as was my father. A cousin was on an insulin pump by the time she was 30. Yes, genetics has a lot to do wiht it.

I see you are almost 60 years old... so you would have been ~54ish when diagnosed..Just out of curiousity what is / was your physical activity like? are you over weight? smoke, drink?, etc????
I only know of one black girl (daughter of one of my employees) who looks close to normal who has Diabetes. I do not know what kind of history she has for eating and exercise so.....)... Everyone else that I know who is diabetic eats dorito's and french fries while getting zero physcial activity.
I quoted from the link provided above.... It appears some people can control it with exercise and proper diet.
