Default What do I bring to college?

Hey guys! I'm going off to college this upcoming summer and am unsure what to bring to my dorm!!!! How much stuff I bring influences the car I will use for transportation, as much as I wish for it to be a s2k..... Extremely unlikely.... So anyway! What are some essentials!!!???

I've heard you can pickup "dorm kits" with some stuff and I know you need a bed bug cover for your mattress (bleh!), clothes, towels.... I just would like to prepare ahead of time and get a list, thanks guys and gals so much!!!

Crappy Lappy just in case the zombies eat your laptop.
2 sets of sheets
Bed bug sheet
Some disinfecting agents, like Lysol, etc.
Clothes - consider where you're going. Don't bring your shorts for that J-Term snowshoeing class at Northland College.
x kajillion
Your campus may be bike friendly - use it (cheaper than gas, usually).
Some basic cooking utensils for that cereal, Ramen, and Mac N' Cheese
Tub of aftershave or cologne - use the cheaper stuff, so you smell like daddy issues, not Mr. Nice Guy.(proclivity depending)

+1 for that. I was "lucky/unluckly" that I had to transfer after junior college before an university due to inability to pay for the tuition & saw too many freshman drop outs in their first year getting lost in partying.

So on top of open mind, my 2 cents are self-discipline. You are in for one of the greatest times that could shape the rest of your life.

Party hard, work harder! The rest are just material things that you'll get by with or without.

if you have common showers you need to bring:

a tote to carry your items to and from the bathroom
extra supply of toothbrushes because you will drop yours at some point and its not like at home......you DO NOT want to use it again
flip flop for the showers
a robe (i found was easier to toss on and walk back to my room versus a towel)

You need to have an idea of your room. Some places have cold ass tile and no carpet! Get a huge area rug and or scraps from a carpet store to piece together. Some dorms dont even have curtains so you will need some of them if thats the case. You wont want anyone watching you fire one off.

If its possible to talk with your "roommate" if you have one(I was lucky and had a room to myself),...you do not both want to end up bringing two mini fridges and two futons so talk before hand if possible or dont bring anything except personal items till you know for sure.

You will probably have a meal plan of some sort I imagine so dont stress the food for the room toooo much but have some snacks for after hours cravings.

Dont bring things you dont want to show up missing, like DVDs. People like to borrow that shit and then lend it to someone else and you never see it again. It is totally STUPID to bring home theater systems . You can not use them in the dorms without people hating you plus they take up too much room.
You will probably need some power strips for the outlets
A fan will do wonders for keeping you cool and blocking out the people down the hall talking on their phones outside their room.
Paper towels
Paper cups for coffee/drinks is much easier than having to scrub out the mug you forgot to rinse last weekend. Its wasteful but easier in the dorms.
Wet wipes
windex for cleaning
drawer liners or wallpaper of sometype to put inside(some dressers are nasty and you wont want your underwear on whatever soaked into the wood)
Youre not suppose to have open flames but some candles are nice to get food smells out especially if you got a lady coming over. Nothing like a ramen smell to kill the mood.
Condoms!! They will probably hand them out in your welcome pack but its nice to have a supply even if you dont need them....someone on your floor will be knocking at 2am asking for one and you can be the cool the kid who saved the night

IMO people tend to go nuts when the go to college and buy up the whole Target. Truth is you are likely moving into a 20 x 15 cube that you are sharing with 1 or 2 other people so try to bring as little as possible. Its not going to have all the comforts of "home" so don't even bother. Concentrate on the things you need to succeed academically. A good computer and headphones, comfortable bedding and clothing, a couple mementos, toiletries, towels.

I would forgo any major appliances. Fridges/microwaves/TVs/Stereos. You have someone cooking all your meals for you and on most campuses they have a wide variety of dining options/times. Laptops are decent enough for watching shows/movies etc, plus it will encourage you to get out and be social if your room is more bare-bones.

Room Priorities
Studying
Sleeping

Campus should have plenty of places to hang out

Also, don't bother buying all the stuff before you leave home. Just bring the stuff you can't get in the town your are moving too (if they don't have an ikea, for example) otherwise you are just wasting gas transporting stuff that you could have bought locally.

You will thank me when its time to move out of the dorms and into an apartment. I was able to move twice during college without renting a rental truck (just using a hatchback car and making a few trips). You will probably move around a couple times during your time away.
