With a dead motherboard, I don't think there's much to be done besides something like picking up a used model with a broken display but otherwise working off ebay.

Yeah, some of the HP models from 2-3 years ago had chronic video/motherboard related overheat issues. Shit kept frying.

I think you're fine. I usually like HP, but the ones from about 2 1/2 years ago had an issue with (this is to the best of my memory, I cannot verify this 100%) the gpu getting overheated on the motherboard, due to the cpu and the gpu being too close in proximity, and there was inadequate cooling for it.

You should be fine.

To paint you a picture of how frequent the issue was though, I had an HP tablet pc from 2 1/2 years ago, and two friends of mine had other HPs from within a month or two of each other. All of our computers had issues with overheating, both of theirs had their GPUs fried twice.
