what to do with old laptop?

Knew it! My old HP burned out about three times if I recall. Once the battery, twice the HD. I used to have to stand it up on an edge because it would get so hot underneath... Ironically my old Compaq was a great computer, and as far as I know they were the same company at the time (still?).
Ted H I believe the overheats were due to the Sony batteries. I could be wrong but I think I remember there being an issue about them melting or causing fires. My battery was atrocious and after it burned out I had to get the bulky 12 hour one. Laptop was still a POS.
It was a Pavilion DV1000 I think?

To paint you a picture of how frequent the issue was though, I had an HP tablet pc from 2 1/2 years ago, and two friends of mine had other HPs from within a month or two of each other. All of our computers had issues with overheating, both of theirs had their GPUs fried twice.

I don't think I need to remind everyone of the iBook overheating problem from the year or two before the HP one. All manufacturers are subject to problems, running to Mac ain't going to fix it all.
On that note, HP has been doing really well lately. Right now, if I was buying, I'd go HP or Asus--or, if you swing that way, MAC.
