Sweet Tea....yumm.

In the south, the correct tea question should be diabetic inducing levels of sugar or not.

OMG...sweet tea...another southern thing. no offense to any southerners here, but how much sugar is in sweet tea? i've grown to like it in the 9 months working in louisiana. my coworkers and i went to this pie place for lunch called Not Just Pie and 2 of us are from Denver, 3 from NYC and 2 from Dallas. there's always a pitcher of unsweet tea and sweet tea and coke (as in Coca Cola). those from Denver never understood why people drink sweet tea. they thought it tasted horrible. and they always order "unsweet tea" which is regular unsweetened icea tea. we've grown accustomed to ordering "sweet tea". but damn that's a lot of sugar!

like i said i've grown to like it and wouldn't mind having it now and then but i haven't had any since i left louisiana in december.

Call it pop or call it soda, but it's pretty stupid to call all soft drinks "coke". Since there's actually Coca Cola (coke), it's confusing to get mixed up with the other brands/types.

I call it both soda and pop; just depends on what i feel like saying.

Isn't tonic just carbonated water - ie gin and tonic?

semi-related and good for your health:

I've recently discovered the greatness that is a homemade grape soda. seriously, this has all the yummy-ness of a regular sugar-rich, type-II diabetes promoting "soda/pop/Coke/etc" but is cheaper, better for you, and tastes better IMO. mind you, I generally don't like straight grape juice, but this tastes GREAT and I have it now with any meal I eat at home.

easy to make recipe:
- 100% grape juice (not the white grape juice, but the dark purple stuff. I use Newman's Own brand Grape Juice.)
- seltzer water (NOT tonic water, not carbonated mineral water... just cheap seltzer water... $.99/liter from Safeway)

pour equal parts together in a glass with ice. experiment with the ratios, but I've found I prefer a bit more seltzer water than grape juice.

to me, this stuff tastes yummy-- especially with a meal-- and fulfills my soda cravings nicely. very healthy for you too. if your New Year's Resolution was to give up sodas or otherwise diet related, this should help.

You may find it stupid, but there's a good reason for it. Coca-cola was created in the South (Atlanta, to be exact) and was the only soft drink for quite some time, therefore all soft drinks were cokes for a while. That's how the name Coke became so embedded here.

No, tonic water has sugar (or sweetener in the diet version).
