Default What do you do 1st when your new PC arrives?

Hey folks,

Well, my desktop disappeared on me last week (donated involuntarily to a family business). Needless to say, my new Dell Laptop should be here by the end of the week, and I'm excited about my powerful new replacement.

What I'm not so enthused about is having to reinstall all my fave software, and adjust settings to my liking. Among the tasks at hand, importing favourites and cookies will be second only to getting the Internet up and running (wireless of course) so that I can surf s2ki.com. Also on the "to do" list is to reinstall Activesync, so that all my contacts, tasks, appointments etc. can be uploaded from my PDA. Time consuming and tedious is the name of the game with transitioning from a new computer to a new one.

So do tell....what is on your "to do" list when you fire-up your new PC for the first time? WHat do you hate most about the transition? What are the must dos for you, just for curiosity's sakes?

Cheers
Asif

Reformat it and put a fresh install of windows. To much program junk that Dell loves to put on to make you think you got a lot of stuff. Most of the stuff they put on is just pure BS.

First turn it on. Smell the new plastic, *sniff* ahhh. Customize it to your settings, and test to see if everything works.

if your old PC has XP running, there is an option for Windows to transfer data. it's under Accessories (can't remember what it's called) but it's there to smooth file transfer from the old PC to the new, and I believe it mirrors the folder locations and everything. you'll need an ethernet cable I believe.

and just after re-installing the OS... .running through about a billion of updates that XP has online.... including those dumb ones that are exclusive and they require their own reboot.. Last week I rebuilt a laptop and it had about 45+ updates/fixes to be applied.

Then add the anti-virus software.... then the applications
