We have a 15 month old so maybe I can help out.

By far the best present we found was a 30 or 40 dollar push/ride on toy. It allows them to practice standing up and walking. Walmart etc will have them.

Most kids around this age are into containers -- putting stuff into and taking stuff out of containers. They sell container sets for kids.

My kid got a block set at 1. While she is still not great at putting them together she does love to knock them down.

A baby toolset is also a solid bet.

This will sound boring but at that age they will not remember anything you get them. (but they still may find a toy lots of fun for a while) Dpending on your parents financial situation, my sister greatly appeciated a gift to my nephews college fund.

Along the lines of what steve_c said, I'd suggest any kind of toy that encourages development of her motor skills. There are plenty of toys out there like that.

my 9 month old seems to enjoy empty boxes, tupperwear, and anything that makes noises. he has a bunch of toys that get 2 minutes of his time before he is off digging in cabinets.

as a parent, I appreciate when friends get my son clothing or books. my wife is pretty good at reading to him. how about starting her a bank account or something, if she doesn't already have one.
