What does a Rolex say about a person??
i have 2:
s/s submariner and blue/gold submariner.
for me, it was something i always wanted....what type of impression it leaves on others (if any), i can't speak to.....
do i get compliments from those that "know" watches?? absolutely!!!
i also like the classic design of the submariner(s)....i can wear them with jeans or a tux/suit.
i took that into consideration before buying them....
i think it also reflects on a person's taste - sure they're expensive, but there are much more expensive watches out there, too.
*shrugs*
to each their own.....people spend THEIR money on the darndest things

Why by a Rolex? To me the answer was simple. They're bullet proof, just like the S-2000, last a lifetime and have a tremendous re-sale value.
Bought my first "Datejust" 14 K. and Stainless Steel 20 years ago. Takes a lickin and keeps on tickin. Recently purchased a Stainless Steel Submariner while in St. Thomas. Why? It's the only piece of jewelry a man can wear that's accepted worldwide, recognized worldwide and acknowledged worldwide by Captain's of Industry and worldly decision makers. Buy one and you can count on "handing it down" to your children.
Had the occassion to meet with a President of a major Fortune 100 company a short time ago. While everyone else was positioning for attention, he simply stated "I see you wear a Rolex ....somethings are timeless in value.....we should meet later to discuss your company's proposal.
Enough Said?

People who are concerned about things such as what watch you're wearing will know it's a Rolex and be appropriately impressed. Those who don't waste the energy to worry about such trivial things will likely just say, "Nice watch."
Get what you like and you'll enjoy it more. I love Hamilton watches--esp. the old ones. They aren't expensive or impressive, but they do it for me. I love mine!

if you want a real watch at a "reasonable" price, buy a Breitling or an Omega. The Rolex mystique in North America is the result of a rather zealous marketing effort by Rolex. I'm not saying Rolex makes junk, but they are no longer hand-made (as they claim), and the quality of timepiece if far inferior to the previously mentioned brands.
If you have 19k burning a hole in your pocket, look at Patek Phillipe. Patek Phillipe is a truly hand-made timepiece with classic workings and a very nice movement. Start pricing Patek Phillipe, and your Rolex will seem like a Timex by comparison.

Many people can afford pretty expensive cars and such. When you can start withering away money on jewelry and such and still have enough money to buy a huge house, provide for your family, etc, then like someone said earlier, it is purely for stature.
If it is purely for stature, then she should get a Patek Phillippe or Jaeger Lecoultre, as I think they are "higher" up on the status ladder. If she is getting the watch just because she likes the look of it then by all means go for it. I just think if you're gonna spend that much money, why not get the best?

well, if you don't mind the country of origin, i've seen some REAL nice Rolexes from China
and they looked pretty good. the quality and finish is getting to a point where you can't tell at all unless you really look hard at it.

"There's too many self-indulgent wieners in this city with too much bloody money!"
This past weekend I was at a jewelry store they had many Rolex. The first that caught my eye was a white gold Presidental diamond face, bezel and center links down the entire bracelet. Price $95,000. Next to it a platinum Rolex with diamond bezel. Price $64,000.....
You get what you can afford I guess.

i think the consensus/thought was that 19K is too much to spend on ANY watch.....
What is it about a Rolex?
It IS without a doubt: the world's finest Mass-Produced-Watch. Rolex makes about 750,000 watches per year. Forget about the ad slogan that claims the watch takes a year to create- Ha! Add it up. Rolex IS the world's most recognized timepiece. A Rolex can get you IN in the right places and it can get you Killed in the wrong places... Rolex literally invented the waterproof watch: the Oyster. A Rolex is Very durable. Also true: there are better watches.
Any rational person would buy a cheap digital watch- they tell the time, are very accurate and reliable. Clocks are so common these days you can get away without wearing a watch- just ask any pretty girl if she has the time. Some people are CRAZY about watches. There are some SERIOUS collectors out there; it can become a real addiction... Life has it's complications.

I have a Heuer that I bought in 1982 and I still wear it often. It's taken Much abuse and it is very accurate. I got a Tag-Heuer a few years ago because I really like the bracelet. The Tag is considered by those-in-the-know as a glorified swatch, but still, it makes me happy. My dad recently gave me his old Rolex president. I put a crocodile band on it and it looks Great, fairly subtle. Women DO respond to the Rolex: a shame, but very, very, VERY true. I plan to give the Rolex to my kid (if and when I have one) some day. I finally stepped up to a really "serious" timepiece- I'm wearing it now: a Seiko Mickey Mouse chronograph. It makes me smile (bonus: it tells time).
