What kind of .45 should I get?

I'm looking for a 1911 for target shooting or home defense.

I was thinking about a Kimber gold combat:

Any other recommendations?

My wife has a original model 1911 (I think) chambered for .22 . It was developed as a target pistol to decrease
ammunition expenses for the Army.

I think it is a collectors item.

The Kimber's are very nice but I have a Glock 30 .45 ACP for the following reasons:

1. The Glock is smaller yet it has a larger magazine capacity (10 + 1 in the pipe)

2. The Glock doesn't have a safety. If the weapon is for personal defense; should you ever have to use it (for most people this is very unlikely) you may not have the presence of mind to flip off the safety. I saw video on fox where a jewelry shop owner got into a close quarters gun fight with a bad guy. The shop owner never got off a shot because of the safety.

The best safety is an educated owner practicing safe gun handling procedures.

3. The Glock is very accurate.

The only down side of my Glock is the grip is thick because of the double stack magazine.

Glocks rule.

BTW If you haven't already, you should Join the NRA. There is precious little that stands between the American citizen and those who would deny us our rights.

Get the Kimber! My girlfriend has an AWESOME Kimber "gold" I think...it's definately BALANCED for whatever barrel conversion kit you happen to get, plus it fits together VERY well!!! She's got the .45 with the .22 conversion for "target" shooting

Me however, my thinking is "bigger is better" heheeh I do the Desert Eagle 50...sucker weighs a TON, is barrel heavy, and just about feels like it's going to rip your arms out when shooting it, and it's EXPENSIVE! (Rounds cost over $1.75 here!)
I bought it for the reason, that if I point the gun at something, no matter if something is in the way, I intend to hit it (or kill it) so I don't use it 'cept when I'm healed up (dislocated shoulder and ripped tendons), and ready to goto Shooting World.

I have a Kimber Pro CDP as well as teo G30's. You cannot go wrong with either one. The Glock is more durable though, but the kimber is a piece of art. So is the Glock though, in its simplicity.

Ever think of getting a Colt Phyton 357 revolver?
One of the most accurate stock gun and no safety to fiddle
around like the Glock when you need to 'self defence'.

The desert eagle .50 is like a cannon. Fun to play but no
good in self-defence situation.

If you want a nicely balanced .45 with great accuracy out of the factory (unlike the various types 1911 and Norinco clones), look no further than the SIG&Sauer P220. I have a collection of the SIGs, and I have to say it's the Mercedes of handguns (Made in Germany - most of them anyways). Recoil is controlled, and I can do about 2.5" groups at 20 feet (not very good, i know).

That's the BEST .45 you would want, IMO

Of course I prefer the ballistics of .357SIG and its controlled recoil. .40S&W P228 is good too.

I'd like one too, but I wouldn't want half the public here to have them, so I'll relinquish my right to bare arms if it means they won't arm bears.
