What is so tough about recycling?

Well, because some people just don't care and it is just a "hassle" for them. I am about to move into my new neighborhood soon, and I thought of going around and collecting everyones' cans and recycle it. Plus it will be a good way to know my neighbors.

Some areas are better than others for recycling. Visiting friends in the States, I was completely shocked to learn that some people have to pay to recycle. In the county I work in, garbage is divided into 'wet' and 'dry' - they sort everything for you. IMO, many people won't recycle unless it's painfully easy.
Perhaps more effective than recycling is minimizing the waste you create. Think about all the garbage you generate from food packaging alone. But it's also so easy to forget the potential damage if you don't see it right in front of you on a daily basis.
Bottom line is, some people don't care about anything beyond their little world - not outside their neighbourhood and not 20 years down the road.

I live outside the city limits and the county doesn't recycle because for the years that they were doing it was costing about 3 million a year more than they were taking in. They had a choice of raising rates or not recycling so they quit. 300 yards away from me in the "city" they've just started recycling again anyway and they have to pay more for their garbage collection.
I'm with ya, scot. I'm not a tree hugger, but I still cringe at the amount of wasting people do.
I'm still bad at work because we don't have a viable way to recycle here. Maybe I should just keep a small box around and take stuff home with me every week...
I try to recycle as much as I can at home. My recycling box is generally overflowing every week. I think that every little bit helps.
On the flip side, recycling some products produces more waste than to just create new product, so recycling isn't as "good" as everyone thinks.

The paper recycle bins are about 4 feet from the trashcan.... apparently people can't move that extra 4 feet.... so I look like a goober and dig it back out.
I hate how clueless people actually belive that recycling saves the earth. FYI people the majority of the time the recycling procedure creates more pollution than the initial creation of the product. If you argument is going to be about how landfills take up space then I have to
at you because space isn't a real issue, pollution is. Keep recycleing maybe they will get it right. Do you know how much of our recycling goes into the landfill? How much gets burned for fuel? Burning plastic doesn't seem too enviormentally friendly to me
