When I was placed in that situation with my pup, I found it hard to put a limit to the amount of money I would spend. My pup unfortunately had liver cancer that was inoperable. The vet would've been able to prolong his life for 6 months but quality of life would've been poor.
At the time if the vet told me we can fix him for $x.xx, I wouldn't have hesitated. My pup was like my first kid and I would've done anything for him. Really sucks that our pets have such short life spans.
Well its a tough decision, especially if money is tight. I am with those that say if the prognosis is good and the animal is youthful I would be willing to spend a great deal. I could not ask for a better more loyal friend than my dog.
Here is the odd thing about my dog, he has a condition called Canine Alopecia X. In simple terms he has dog pattern baldness. No joke, if I don't give him a medication called Trilostane his hair will continue to fall out and my dog is a long haired dog (Keeshond) that looks like a fuzzball.
(not my dog)
That medication was, within the last 6 months or so, approved by the FDA but prior to that I had to import it thorugh a specialist from the UK at a cost of $150 per month. Thats close to $2k a year before vaccinations, tumor removal (twice at $1k) and teeth cleanings (twice at $400).
All told I have spent about $25,000 EASY on my 14 year old dog. But I would do it again in a heartbeat. He is now considered an old timer by dog standards but is still a very spry young acting dog, and if he needed an operation costing a few grand even though realistically he has only a couple more years anyway, well I would spend that too. If it was too keep him around for my sake and he would have a painful poor quality of life then I would have to let him go.

Just saw "Marley and Me." I read the book a year or so ago. That dog is exactly like mine and the dog's story mirror's mine. It's going to kill when he dies. I think my wife and daughter will take it the worst. My kids have never known life without the dog.
Saw that movie too. One of the only movies around that actually made me shed a tear. I read the book a year prior so I knew how it would end, still ended up blubbering like a dope.
I don't know what it is about labs, but just looking a pictures of them reduces my stress level and calms me down. They just have such an honest and sincere face.
ive lost pets before..but back then it wasnt my choice whether to keep them or not.
i had a cat and two rabbits we had to give away when we moved. (didnt have a choice)
then when i moved to texas we got another cat.
now this cat is about 8-9 years old and i have to make the descition to put her to sleep or not.
she lives in pain, i can see it in her. its almost like shes given up.
i know what i SHOULD do, but making my self do it is another thing.
i havent gone a year in my life without a cat.
:/
that being said, i would pay as much as i could REASONABLY afford.
btw, is the animal insurance?
I had a Dalmation/husky mix that got hit by a car after he escaped the yard, he suffered sever damage to his right rear leg. After 2 surgeries and finally having to have the leg removed after it died, he was down to 3 legs and gave us 6 more great years of him unitl he died of natural causes...anyway, all of his surgeries/medication was inexcess of $6K and I would do it all again for my current black lab/dalmation.
they become part of your family and I do anything for a family member even if I have to max my CC out.
It's not what I would spend to save my dog...it's how much would I get for selling the dog to some downtown Korean restaurant so they can enjoy some homeland food
And before you PC police get your panties in a bunch....I would look up who eats dog before you dare attack. Have a nice day
