I never understood this tradition. There are so many parts that are lame. For quick instance...^^^^ shouldnt you be doing that like all the time technically? And if you arent, your not doing god a favor by stopping that month. ftr im not very religious but with all due respect I just dont get catholicism.

Lent commemorates the 40 days Jesus fasted in the desert. He spent this time in prayer and fasting in order to gain additional insight and instruction as to his mission. As Catholics, we are called to emulate Jesus and called use this time, like Jesus, to gain our own spiritual insight.
