what's an effective sleeping pill for airplanes
Over the counter despite what others said, the best is Benadryl 25-50 mg. It also helps control motion sickness as a bonus. Melatonin won't really get you to sleep on the plane, but is scientifically proven to reduce jetlag after the flight.

Combine a benzodiazepine, barbituate, and alcohol for maximum effectiveness.
Seriously though, the over the counter sleep aids are pretty much worthless. They will leave you feeling groggy and tired. They're just repackaged Benedryl (Diphenhydramine HCL). Nyquil might not be so bad. Melatonin, at least for me, is very subtle in effect.
Your best bet would be to obtain some short half life benzodiazepines such as Xanax (Alprazolam) or Halcion (Triazolam). They will take the edge off while making you drowsy and relaxed. The latter is used by military special forces while flying to their destination.

melatonin...
or you could go to the ambien or lunesta websites, print out a voucher for one of their "7-night free trials," go to your doctor and get it filled. those things knock me the eff out... especially ambien. my roommates make fun of me when i take those and try to stay awake cause i act like a dipshit/creep and don't remember it at all the next day.

funny story, when i was in brazil 2 years ago, i met a us ranger, he gave me some sleeping pills, like what daniel l mentioned- Halcion (Triazolam). i asked how strong they were. he said that he took them on his trips to afghanistan and to iraq and one time, he took one just as he was getting seated, saw that he had to mount his weapon in the cabinet, so he got up and walked the few steps to the locker area of the plane, as he turned around the plane started to move off, and it was kinda bumpy, he struggled to get to his seat as he was being thrown side to side, he gets in his seat, looks out the window and the plane hadnt moved, next thing he knows, he is waking up in sunny afghanistan.
i took one, left rio, next thing i know, were flying over vanuatu some 9 hours later, i was out.
get the prescription ones if u can, or take half a box of the over the counter ones
