Default What's the nicest thing . . . ?

Activily following gregstevens suggestion for decency, and remembering a thread last week which claimed to list the most offensive things one can say, I was wondering what's the nicest thing you've ever said to someone, or the nicest thing someone's said to you. Not from someone who is obligated to say nice things to you (parents, spouse, children, and so on), but unanticipated, unrequired, and sincere. And let's keep it decent, shall we?

Here's mine: several years ago I was playing in a bridge tournament against extremely good opponents. By playing an unusual card I deceived one of my opponents, allowing me to win a hand I should have (and would have, without the deceit) lost. The next day I was playing again and she came to my table with her husband. "Watch this guy," she told her husband, "he's tricky with queens."

(A close second came later the first evening when I heard two experts discussing a hand. "The expert play is the queen of hearts," one said. "Excuse me," I butted in, "are you talking about board #2?" "Yes, board 2." Same hand, and I had played the queen of hearts.)

(For those of you who don't play bridge, this would be like Mark McGuire pointing at me and telling Barry Bonds "Watch this guy, he has a nasty slider.")

Mine would be:

Can you please train me, <insert my name on Starcraft shareware>?

I am often very surprise people think I am that good in game and asking me to "train" them is a eye-opener.

I guess the nicest thing ever said to me by someone other than a close relative was when my first-grade teacher looked at a drawing of a Scottie dog I was making and squealed and clapped her hands, telling me what a wonderful artist I was (I think this lady invented self-esteem).

She took the artwork, and I never saw it again for nearly five years, when it was returned to me framed, with several ribbons attached. It seems she had entered it in a number of shows on my behalf. I suppose this one event was what inspired me to become a graphic artist later in life.

I can remember my tutor telling me what a thick bugger I was
(not in those terms - more polysyllables - and much more erudite and cutting). BTW he was right!

We who teach math should bear this in mind.

I can't understand a word my math teacher says in my lecture (literally, too heavy of an accent. Also, just sucks at teaching). Fortunately, I have a GORGEOUS math workshop gal who basically teaches me everything. Now that's some motivation to learn.

btw, she's the touchy feely type

The clerk at Home Depot said I "smelled pleasant", I think she meant that in a nice way
