What makes you so sure you have your man/woman?
Because 12 piers are certain, must be the right person.
No coming back from that sentence on new DNA evidence.

Then even if it IS the person, how can you support the authorities administering such penalties?

I can understand vigilante justice, emotional and passionate, but state administered... :shakeshead:

12 piers?

Do you mean 12 peers?

Our current "justice" system is state administered and piss poor.

Sure, a typo / spelling error.

What gets me is when people are MORE upset about crimes involving animals than they are people.

Some lady drives around with her "toy" dog in her lap. Something happens with the dog and she hits some guy. They pull over and he is pissed. He throws the dog into traffic and drives off.

This happened right around the time of the Jon-Benett-Ramsy-Whatever her name was case was going on.

I don't remember the exact numbers, but it was something along the lines of a $250,000 reward for finding the dog killer and a $50,000 reward for the killer of the small child. Weird.

I agree that being sure you have the right person is the hard part in terms of defending the dealth penalty. However, I believe that one of the reasons it is not a deterrant is because they do not use it ENOUGH. Forget the electric chair, get electric bleachers!

no...this gives the government far too much power, what happens when someone is falsely accused, or worse falsely convicted? When one of the governments enemies speaks up then can they just claim they commited a crime and kill them on the spot?

ruexp67, that is a bad example. I can lose my montblanc pen and offer a $2,000,000 reward, so you can't equate the reward amounts with value of life. Those rewards were likely privately funded. (e.g. There was recently a $50,000 reward for the lost Stradivarius cello in L.A.)

Maybe we are just desensitized by kidnappings and murders, so when something out of the ordinary happens it gets sensationalized. Nick Berg was beheaded in Iraq and we get upset, but dozens of people in the U.S. are probably murdered everyday and we just glance over those.

A few years ago, there was a mountain lion who attacked a child in a remote residential area near here. There was a huge amount of $ raised to relocate the lion to a safer environment... there wasn't much $ collected for the poor kid he mauled.

That said, an eye for an eye is barbaric! Only god has the power and wisdom to judge and punish in that way. Until our justice system is completely flawless, we have absolutely no right to be.

I see people post on these boards that they want divine retribution for such small crimes. What about some perspective? I know that there are a lot of very bad people out there who get away with some horrible crimes. Unpunished or underpunished, they'll probably do it again. Unfortunately, there have also been a number of innocent people incarcerated or put to death over the years for crimes they didn't commit.

I'd much rather have lots of bad guys out on the street than one innocent one in jail or executed. It's that kind of rational thinking and decent compassion that has made America the great nation it is! Too bad we're moving away from that now...
