Summer 1993, Compaq 486/66 + 9600 bps modem + Netcom Unix shell account. That was the first access to the REAL internet. Later I installed SLiRP on the shell and emulated a SLIP account to acquire web access. Prior to this it was all BBSs throughout the 80's using all sorts of crappy hardware. If you haven't worked online with an 8088 PC and a 1200 baud modem, you haven't paid your dues.

1996 - I was a tutor in the computer lab at a college I went to. I had lots of time on my hands to learn it. My background was lots of BBS time in the old days with a 1200 baud modem and eventually getting up to a 14000.

Ahhhh....the good'ole days!

Jeez -- you people getting into the game in 1996. Didn't JavaScript exist then? 1996 isn't "the good old days" at all.

And for those of you who programmed your Altairs with DIP switches, you own us all.

First time I used the net on a regular basis was early 96 when I got my first ever computer. A Pentium 133 Mhz, 16 MB Ram, 1.2 Gigs, 15 inch Magitronic monitor, SOundLand Speakers, and even a microphone!! Man, I stil lhave that computer, but I surely dont use it. Its on life support hanging by a limb. 1996 was one memorable year though, lots of stuff went down that year... ahh the memories

Your demeanor and knowledge (and occasionally, your arrogance) gave me the impression that you were much older - 40s/50s. Just struck me as odd, that's all.

WestSideBilly...

Well, demeanor and knowledge are purported to become better as one ages... arrogance, on the other hand, is usually a feature of youth.

1989 or 1990~ish, "Prodigy"... ugh! CGA monitor and a 300 baud modem. Wasn't that fun? =/

If only mom & pop got me the analog phone dialer for the Atari 800, I'd be soooo 1337!
