From: Pittsburgh..south side..
My wife and I are starting traveling for work, together. Though our company is based in Indy, since we are going to be traveling all the time anyway, and mostly to east coast locations, they don't care if we a)move back to Indy b) stay here in Pittsburgh, or c) move somewhere else near to an airport that isn't too far from the east coast.
We've lived in Pittsburgh about a year (indy before that) and we thought, hell, if we can live anywhere, might as well be somewhere nice, for the weekends we're at home (the burgh is nice, but I wouldn't mind seeing some water). A colleague suggested the Virginia Beach area, though I don't know much about it. I don't know where else to start looking, so if you could suggest a few places, I'll go and research them from there.
We'd like
-decent sized city (not too small town-ish)
-somewhere <1 hour from the beach would be great
-near ( <1 hour) to a significant airport, with quick flights to the east coast (about as quick as from Indy)
-cost of living (will be renting a place) not a ton higher than a place like Indy or Pitt (but I'll look those numbers up after I get some suggestions)
Hope you guys can help. Thanks in advance

Atlanta is nice but the beach isn't all that close. You might be able to find something north of town on the lake but the traffic to the airport can be a bitch.
Orlando. Not too far from the Gulf or the Atlantic and easy to get flights out of. Clearwater/St. Pete. Airport is near and you can't beat the Gulf beaches.
How about this from Google maps?
Start address: Cocoa, FL.
End address: MCO - Orlando Intl Airport
Distance: 39.9 mi (about 45 mins)

If you travel for a living (like me), you may want to be close to a major airport, not sure if that matters to you. I've been all over the US, and I personally love the South East the most - great weather, connected to the rest of the country, everything's reasonably close.
Of the SE states, I love North Carolina the most, which is why I live there - southern enough to avoid most of Virginia's snow and higher taxes (plus no radar detector law), northern enough to avoid the ridiculous heat of Georgia and the flatness of Florida. South Carolina's government and school system are turn offs for me, but Raleigh NC has one of the nation's best school systems, has a decent airport, is growing like crazy, and has some of the lowest housing prices in the nation currently.
If you're looking for major cities, I really like Chicago Ill, but you have snow in winter and heat in summer. Philidelphia is another nice city, also up north, but right in the main corridor between DC and NYC. Once you get north of NYC, you start to get far from stuff imo.
I also have some friends that live in Dallas and they really love it - its a little to far west for me, but they claim they can get to most of the country easily thanks to American having a hub there.

Miami, FL
- Big city, great night life.
- South Beach, enough said.
- Miami International is a major airport and headquarters for American Airlines.
- Cost of living is significantly higher. Average house in Miami costs about $450K, townhouses are about $300K, condos vary greatly however the market is starting to stablize and ever decrease a bit. Rent starts from $1K for a 1/1 in an OK neighborhood and goes up from there. You have to pay to play in Miami.

DUDE Seriously check out the Tampa Bay Area!!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful area with alot to do, Tampa International Airport is among the best in the nation.
We got the Bucs, and the Lightning if you like sports. Spring training is down here as well.
We got the Gulf Coast Beaches which rank among the top five in the country.
Plenty of S2Ks in the area.

why not travel for a year, and then use your experience at that point to decide where you want to live?
I'd be tempted to go with San Diego purely for the weather, but Madrid would be a close second, I think (but your trans-oceanic commute would be hell
). Chicago is nice if you have no kids, just get a place on the Blue line for an easy commute to O'Hare. What do you wan out of a place to live? You might break that down before making a decision.
