I'm frankly Appalled. Not so much by the denial of the award but more so by the punishment.

He wasn't denied the award, because he wasn't running for it. His posters were for next year's award. What he was denied was eligibility for the award--which is worse than being the award. He wasn't merely told that he couldn't win the contest, he was told that he was not allowed to enter the contest.

 

You worded it much better then me, but that is exactly why this appalled me.

 

To be eligible, I feel that you have to be American, and of an African (black) descent. African-American.

 

what about the kids that were suspended for putting up the posters? How screwed is that? Why does there need to be a separate award (please don't give the very TIRED and WORN out excuse that a person of color couldn't win b/c of the inherently evil, white racist system)? If there was an outstanding white kid award, the NAACP would be all over that school like stink on sh*t. I really loathe double standards. Why would someone want to be separated out based on race. It totally sends the wrong message i.e. you can't compete with white kids, so we'll make a special award for you.
